Forever Drake Drake Says Jay-Z Wasn’t Immediately Sold On ‘Over’

Drake‘s breakout mixtape, So Far Gone, set the bar pretty high for his upcoming debut album, Thank Me Later. His first offering, “Over,” was intensely debated, but DJs co-signed the single almost immediately.
One critic, however, wasn’t as quick to deliver praise. According to Drake, Jay-Z had to warm up to the record.
“I got a funny e-mail today from Jay-Z about ‘Over’,” Drake said during a conference call for DJs.
The Toronto lyricist said Jay offered an analogy to describe the way the track grew on him. He compared the song to “the girl you see at the club, she’s not the cutest,” Drake explained. “But then you speak to her and realize that she’s one of the sexiest women of all time.”
Drake premiered his follow-up to “Over” early Thursday morning, April 29, the Kanye West-produced “Find Your Love.” He recently shot a video for the track in Jamaica, and images from the set have leaked online. Two other Thank Me Later tracks, “Fireworks” and “Shut It Down” featuring The-Dream, have sprung up online.
Drake also revealed during the call that he might have a bonus track on his debut album featuring Lupe Fiasco and upstart MC J. Cole. “I think that would be a special moment for hip-hop fans,” he said, before adding a joke. “For people that are disappointed when I drop songs like ‘Find Your Love,’ I think they would appreciate that. Hopefully they’re both willing.”

Forever Drake Drake Talks About The Evolution Of The Mixtape Game
April 23rd, 2010
Forever Drake
On Mondays, we usually bring you our main pick, but we had to start this week by saluting mixtapes. We’re proud that so many MCs are stepping their mixtape game up. The mixtape world is strong, potent and competitive right now.
This year alone, we’ve seen Fabolous, Wiz Khalifa, Jim Jones and Asher Roth drop product off in the streets and the Internet. The next few weeks are going to be flooded with ferocity, with Young Jeezy, the Game, T.I. and Rick Ross, just to name a few, dropping soon. Long live the underground!
We asked Drake, the guy with the biggest mixtape of the past few years, So Far Gone, what he thought about the state of mixtapes right now. He said everyone has to come with their best.
“I think that when creating a mixtape, you have to approach it with a selfless mind-set,” Drake told us. “A mixtape can’t be the songs that don’t make your album, or songs that aren’t good enough to make your album make your mixtape — unless you’re that good. There aren’t that many people that are that good. I’m not that good. That mixtape, So Far Gone, is me working my hardest. It wasn’t ‘Oh, here are the songs I’m gonna give away to you cause I have better songs coming.’ A mixtape has become an album.
“Before, I remember people used to be in the studio cutting songs, and they would be like, ‘Oh, that song is OK. I’ll just put it on my mixtape,’ ” he added. “Now a mixtape is an actual tool. It’s a format you need. You don’t necessarily need it, but it can be useful. Like with Fab and the other guys, I know they do a lot of rapping on other guys’ beats. It’s hard to tour like that, as incredible as it may be. Now Wayne, when the No Ceilings set comes on, it’s ridiculous. It’s hard to rap over other people’s songs and have it be timeless. With So Far Gone, when I did flip other people’s songs, half the time people didn’t know what song it was. I tried to pick stuff that was new or rare or just like an album cut. But yeah, man, if I use somebody else’s beat, I try to make a song out of it.

Drake Keeps Lil Wayne’s Name Alive At Atlanta Showcase
April 21st, 2010
Forever Drake
Drake‘s a man of his word. On his latest single, “Over,” the young spitter promises that “the Young Money ship is never sinking.” And with Lil Wayne away, the So Far Gone lyricist has continued to soldier on for the camp as evident on his Away From Home Tour.
On Tuesday night, Drake headlined BMI’s 13th Annual Unsigned Urban Showcase and gave a shout to his incarcerated Young Money boss, along with fellow jailed MCs Lil Boosie and Gucci Mane.
“Free Tunechi and Boosie and free Gucci,” Drake rapped during a freestyle, before telling the crowd that “they make some great music.”
The event, held at the Havana Club, was hosted by crooner Lloyd and featured opening act Travis Porter and OutKast’s Big Boi, who was honored with the Legends of ATL Award.
Lloyd pulled double duty during the festivities, joining Drake and his band onstage for a series of R&B-tinged hits, like “Successful” and “A Night Off.”
Drake then picked things up with rowdier fare like “Uptown” and “Over.”
“I know way too many people here right now that I didn’t know last year, who the f— are y’all?” he sang on the hook.
Those in attendance for the packed performance included Jermaine Dupri, songwriter Sean Garrett, producer Jazze Pha, Bobby V, and DJ Drama, who co-hosted the proceedings.
Drake later pulled Birdman onstage with him for their collaboration “Money to Blow.” The Cash Money boss and Drizzy did their best to keep Wayne’s name active while the rapper completes his jail sentence.
“When I say ‘free,’ you say ‘Weezy,’ ” Drake directed the crowd.
“I’m gonna do everything I told him I would do, what I said in the song: keep us afloat till he gets back,” Drake told MTV News last month, shortly after Lil Wayne turned himself in to police. “You won’t even notice he’s gone. Promise.”

Drake Gets Love From Jamaica During ‘Find Your Love’ Shoot

Cash Money/ Young Money, all one big family. The Birdman recently went out to Rochester Hills, Michigan, to be a surprise guest on Drake‘s Away From Home Tour. Baby joined Drizzy for “4 My Town (Play Ball),” and after the show Drake shared some downtime with the multimillionaire CEO. Sitting in the Birdman’s tour-bus lounge, Drake told us about his recent trip to Jamaica where he shot the video for the Kanye West-produced “Find Your Love,” a track on the June 15 LP Thank Me Later.
“We went to Kingston,” Drake said. “We went to this ‘hood. They call it the ‘gully’ side. It’s bad out there, real bad. They had ‘Young Money’ sprayed on the gates, ‘Drake and Wayne,’ ’cause I came to shoot the video out there. I’m talking about you drive by people’s homes, they had ‘Drake,’ ‘Young Money,’ ‘Drake, Welcome Here,’ ‘Drake We Love You’ — crazy sh–, man. It was so crazy. This dude was like, ‘Original Weezy tha God! You tha boss! Weezy tha God!’ It’s crazy. They love us, ’cause we show love out there.”
It’s April 20 — you know what that means. Some people are celebrating green day, and we’re not talking about the rock band. In any event, check out these releases — some are celebrating today’s theme and some aren’t.
