Cortez Bryant Discusses Building A Strong Foundation With Lil’ Wayne & Discovering Drake’s Star Potential
December 9th, 2010
Rey Cortez Bryant, CEO of Bryant Management (manager to Lil Wayne & Drake) sat with Larry LeBlanc from CelebrityAccess.com and broke down how exactly he got started in the music industry, his New Orleans roots, how Lil Wayne and him built their bond from playing the Cymbals, the Young Money brand, Lil Twist’s organic relationship with Justin Bieber and a slew of more interesting facts.
Below I’ve posted two excerpts from the extensive interview. In the first, Bryant visits back to when Weezy called on him to manage his career and how he was skeptical about taking on such responsibilities since he had no prior experience in the entertainment industry. Cortez then reminisces on the moment he discovered Drake’s star power, even before releasing his critically acclaimed mixtape So Far Gone.
Wayne called you up in your senior year in 2003 and asked you to come and work with him?
He told me that he was ready to move further with his career as an artist. That he could be expanding outside of what he was doing. He wanted me to help him out. He was in an unpleasant place at that time. He needed someone to help him out; (someone) that he thought was smart enough to do it. I guess that I was the college guy. I’m the smart guy. I’m the nerd of the crew. So he hit me up as a friend. I ended up going on the road on weekends for my last semester in school when he was doing clubs shows and things like that. Just to help out, to break in. Once he asked me, I said, “I don’t know what I’m doing but together we can get it. I can learn.”

With Drake’s television background, he could also be a film star.
And, I didn’t know about that. It was three to four months before I found out. I was DJing for Wayne at the time. I was Wayne’s DJ for the past 5 or 6 years. We were on the road for about three months (touring). Drake would hang out with me after the show. Time to break down, and we’d just leave.
We were in Salt Lake City or Denver, I can’t remember what city we were in, but it was in the middle of nowhere in the Midwest, and we are breaking down. The show is over. We had a great show. We killed it. There’s about 200 people still lined up in front of the stage. Most of them women. Most of them little white girls screaming. So I‘m like, “I must have done a god job. Wow, they’re screaming for me. Wayne’s going on in about 10 minutes. They are really still screaming for me.” But I start hearing, “Jimmy, Jimmy.” I’m thinking, “Who the hell is Jimmy? They are not talking about me.” I look to the right, and I see him waving and smiling. “Hello, what’s going on here?” He whispers over to me, “I forgot to tell you. I was on this (Canadian TV) show for, like 7 seasons, called “DeGrassi.” Jimmy was my character.” I was like “What? You act too? Oh, my God.”

Drake Says He Strives To Make Albums Like Kanye West
December 8th, 2010

Drake hopes to achieve the level of quality Kanye reaches with his albums
It isn’t often that albums live up to their hype anymore. Considering the hype surrounding Kanye’s fifth album, it is remarkable the near unanimous love My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy has received. Virtually every major publication has given the album a perfect or near perfect rating. This is the kind of response that Drake wants to receive when he creates a new album.
“Kanye put together a great album. It’s a really solid project. I think people had so much time to sit with the songs, that it threw them off a little bit when the album came out and so many of those songs were already on it,” Drake told The Source. “But at the same time, when you get that project and you can imagine getting all those songs on one day and we didn’t have to deal with the power of leaks and internet stuff. I definitely understand why people hold that album at such high regard. It’s a great project and it’s definitely given me something to strive for, because perfect scores are hard to come by nowadays and I’ve seen a lot of them on that album. That definitely lets me know what I’m gunning for on this next project.”
Drake is preparing his sophomore album, which is titled Take Care. Drake has sought out 9th Wonder and DJ Premier for production. The LP is expected in 2011.
(Video) Drake’s “Fancy” Is MTV News’ #7 Of 2010
December 7th, 2010
Rey All it takes to break into the hip-hop game is one hot guest appearance or a buzzworthy mixtape track. The difficult thing, however, is maintaining that sort of energy and interest. Drake proved that he was up to that task in 2010, and the fact that “Fancy” — which comes in at #7 on MTV News’ Top 25 Songs of the year — was not even a single and still managed to have the impact that it did is a testament to the 24-year-old Canadian’s skill and prowess.
Winning Best New Artist @ The Grammy’s Would Mean The Most To Drake
December 6th, 2010
Rey
Aubrey discussed his Grammy nods, working on his sophomore album, his ideal performance at The Grammy’s and Yeezy receiving five mics in The Source. Below, Drizzy explains why winning Best New Artist would be a HUGE deal to him!
“The one award that means most to me would be Best New Artist, based off the fact that it lets people know how early in our relationship we still are. It lets a fan know, because sometimes, even to me, the last two years feels like ten years, and Thank Me Later is really my first full length album. So Far Gone was really the first time the world got to hear from me, but it’s only really been two years and I’m really just a new artist and God willing if I can still find the creativity to have the inspiration to make music that moves people, I feel like I still have years to go. I think being in that category with such stiff competition is such a great time marker for me. It really even reminded me how young I am in this. With me and (Justin) Bieber, we are two artists that used two new forms of getting discovered. We were found on the internet in a way more independent fashion in a way people used to be discovered. We weren’t found in a showcase and signed to a label, we were discovered on a very grassroots ground level tool which now runs the world. We are internet first artists. To make it from playing an acoustic guitar in your living room, or to make it from 40’s apartment to the GRAMMYs , it’s one of the most inspiring things of our generation. “
